Baptist M&S Imaging opens new center in Schertz

12/3/2014 4:42:32 PM

Located on the second floor of the Baptist Emergency Hospital at IH-35 and Schertz Parkway, Baptist M&S Imaging - Schertz boasts of having the latest imaging technology on the market. The full range of radiological services include a revolutionary MRI Silent Scan, computed technology (CT scan), ultrasound, breast tomosynthesis (3-D Mammogram), X-ray and fluoroscopy.

The Baptist M&S Imaging - Schertz center is the first to introduce to San Antonio GE Healthcare’s Silent Scan MRI technology for head and neurological exams. MRIs are known for being loud when performing exams and conventional MRI scanners can generate noise levels in excess of 110dBA. Some scans can last up to an hour.

The noise that the MRI scanners produce is related to changes in the magnetic field that allow the slice by slice body scan to be carried out. In recent years, industry efforts to speed up the scanning process have also resulted in louder and louder scans. The designers have attempted to dampen these noises with mufflers and baffles, achieving only limited success.

GE’s Silent Scan is achieved through two new developments. First, acoustic noise is essentially eliminated by using a new 3D scanning and reconstruction technique called Silenz. When the Silenz protocol is used in combination with GE’s new high-fidelity MRI gradient and RF system electronics, the MRI scanning noise is largely eliminated at its source.

In addition, the new clinic will offer Hologic’s 3D Mammography (breast tomosynthesis) screening technology which is the first and currently only FDA approved 3D mammography system in the US. The Hologic’s screening technology finds significantly more invasive cancers than a traditional mammogram.

The breast is composed of blood vessels, milk ducts, fat and ligaments. These structures are located at different heights within the breast, can overlap and can cause confusion when viewed as a two-dimensional, flat image. This confusion of overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers can be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal and lead to unnecessary call backs. 3D Mammography is a significant advancement and will play a critical role in the early detection of breast cancer.

With more than 6,000 square feet, the new clinic is staffed with 15 employees and is open 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on Saturday by appointment.

Appointments can be made for Baptist M&S Imaging – Schertz by calling Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Call 210-228-XRAY (9729) to schedule a procedure.
